Everything we collect is protected by law. Here’s how it works and what you need to know.
When you’re asked to provide identification, personal details, or information about your finances, it’s completely natural to wonder what happens to that information.
It’s a fair question, so here’s a clear explanation.
Your Information Is Used for One Purpose
Everything we collect under the AML requirements is used strictly to meet our legal obligations.
This includes verifying your identity, understanding the nature of the engagement, and meeting compliance requirements.
Your information is not used for marketing, shared with business partners, or sold to third parties.
It is handled in line with the Australian Privacy Principles, and we are legally required to keep it secure.
How Long Information Is Kept
Under the AML legislation, we’re required to keep certain records for at least seven years.
This can include identification documents, verification records, and details of the work we’ve completed.
These records may be reviewed by AUSTRAC as part of standard compliance checks.
Two Reporting Requirements to Be Aware Of
There are two types of reporting obligations that apply across all accounting firms.
Threshold Transaction Reports
If a transaction involves physical cash of $10,000 or more, we’re required to report it to AUSTRAC. This applies regardless of the nature of the transaction.
Suspicious Matter Reports
In some situations, we may be required to submit a report if an activity raises concerns under the legislation.
There are also strict confidentiality rules, which means we may not be able to discuss whether a report has been made.
It’s important to note that these reports are a standard part of the financial system and do not automatically indicate wrongdoing. They are simply part of how financial activity is monitored and regulated.
The Bigger Picture
We aren’t collecting this information out of curiosity.
These requirements are set by law and are designed to protect individuals, businesses, and the broader financial system.
From your perspective, the process is simple. When information is requested, providing accurate and up-to-date details helps keep everything moving smoothly.
Your Privacy Matters to Us
We take both our compliance obligations and your privacy seriously.
Everything we collect is stored securely and used only for the purposes required by law.
If you ever have questions about how your information is handled, please feel free to ask. We’re always happy to explain and make sure you feel comfortable with the process.
